VCD Workshop Explores Media’s Role in Shaping Youth Perceptions of Violence and Sexuality

On March 18, 2025, community members, parents, and youth gathered at 1708 Johnson Street for Workshop 7 of the “Safe Communities, Strong Families” series, hosted by Victorious Community Development (VCD) in partnership with the Houghton-Jones Neighborhood Association. The session focused on media literacy and its impact on how individuals, especially youth, perceive violence and make choices in today’s media-saturated environment.
Led by Mr. Billy Erwin, Principal of Success Academy and a member of Omega 180 Community Restoration, the interactive session challenged participants to think critically about the media they consume. Through open discussion and group activities, attendees examined the influence of lyrics in popular music, many of which contain themes of violence and sexuality. Given the presence of younger children, the content was adapted to be age-appropriate, and breakout groups allowed participants to explore and discuss various songs in smaller, guided conversations.

The workshop also featured guest speaker Judge M.T. Thompson and included remarks from Wardene Talley, Vice President of the VCD Board of Directors, and Kristi Phillips, Executive Director of VCD.
As part of the session, participants received free media literacy worksheets, fact-checking tools, and recommended reading lists designed to help families navigate the messages found in music, social media, and other entertainment platforms.
The “Safe Communities, Strong Families” workshop series continues to provide Saginaw residents with critical resources and discussions aimed at building stronger, more connected neighborhoods.
