Golf Meets STEM: VCD Youth Explore New Opportunities at Dow Championship

On June 27, youth from Victorious Community Development’s summer program visited the Dow Championship, a premier women’s golf tournament on the LPGA Tour held at the Midland Country Club. For many of the participants, it was the first time they had ever set foot on a professional golf course, making the experience both exciting and memorable.

At the heart of the visit was the STEM Center presented by Palmer Holland, an interactive hub filled with hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Youth rotated through stations that blended sports and STEM, learning how physics, motion, and engineering drive both athletic performance and innovation.

In the RoboZone, robotics teams from around the region showcased their creations with sponsorship support from Hemlock Semiconductor. Students were able to interact with robots, learning how coding, mechanics, and design work together to solve real-world problems.

The ROV Ring Recovery Challenge let youth pilot a remotely operated vehicle underwater, using tools to retrieve rings while learning about marine technology and problem-solving. Nearby, Saginaw STEM invited students to design and race miniature cars and boats, demonstrating buoyancy, density, force, and motion in action.

Each activity encouraged curiosity and teamwork while connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications. The interactive environment showed students that STEM isn’t just about textbooks, it powers everything from racing and robotics to renewable energy and sports science.

The visit to the Midland Country Club introduced youth to the excitement of a professional sporting event while linking it with hands-on STEM exploration. More than a glimpse of what’s possible, the experience gave them the confidence to see that they belong in those spaces as well, whether competing, inventing, or building futures in STEM.
